Train Derailment Emergency in Rockcastle County: Is the Community Safe Amidst Chemical Spill?

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency in Rockcastle County after a train derailment involving numerous vehicles, leading to a chemical spill, as reported by the Governor’s office. The incident, which occurred in Livingston, KY, involved about 16 train cars, some carrying molten sulfur that caught fire. The train was operated by CSX.

At 2:23 pm today, a CSX train derailed, with at least 16 vehicles involved, including breached molten sulfur cars on fire, according to a statement from the company to ABC News. CSX mentions that burning molten sulfur releases sulfur dioxide, and they are using specialized equipment to monitor the air. The company is collaborating with Rockcastle County’s emergency teams to assess the situation.

Governor Beshear’s office reports at least one home evacuation due to the derailment, and efforts are underway to evacuate more homes. To ensure resident safety, a state of emergency has been declared. Authorities advise people to avoid the area and allow state, local, and CSX officials to respond. The incident has blocked both directions of U.S. Route 25 in the affected area, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

CSX is working on a recovery plan in coordination with local authorities. They have pledged to prioritize the safety and security of the area and are developing a restoration plan. Concerned residents have been provided accommodations in Mt. Vernon, KY, and CSX teams are collaborating with local restaurants to supply food for those impacted by the incident.
